Unit 10: Simple Harmonic Motion and Waves
Exercise Conceptual Questions:
Q1: Give an example of vibratory motion which is not simple harmonic motion. Give a reason of your selection.
A: When a ball is dropped from a height on to the floor and keeps bouncing up and down then its motion is vibratory but not simple harmonic motion because the restoring force F is equal to mg (F=mg) which is a constant and not F directly – x, which is an essential condition for SHM.
Q2: At extreme position, velocity is zero but acceleration is maximum in simple harmonic motion. How can you theoretically explain it?
A: At extreme position, velocity is zero because the object is at rest for instant. At extreme position, acceleration is maximum because at extreme position restoring force is maximum, so acceleration is maximum. (F directly -a)
Q3: What will happen to acceleration of mass spring system if its mass is doubled?
A: If the mass is doubled then acceleration of mass spring system will reduce to half. (detail available in pdf file)
Q4: A simple pendulum has time period T. What will happen to its time period if its thread length is shorten to half?
A: if thread length is shorten to half then time period of simple pendulum will decrease 1.41 times. (mathematically proof available in pdf file)
Q5: A simple pendulum has time period of 4 seconds. Will its time period remain same or change, if its steel bob is replaced by wood bob of same size?
A: Time period will remain same because time period does not depend on mass.
Q6: Same masses are attached to different spring, one is vibrating faster. Why?
A: One is vibrating faster because the spring constant k of different spring is different. The one having greater value of spring constant k will move faster.
Q7: A simple pendulum has time period T in Murree. In Karachi it has different time period. What would you do to make its time period same as it was in Murree?
A: We will increase the length of simple pendulum in order to make the time period of simple pendulum at Karachi equal to the time period at Murree.
Q8: What will happen to the frequency of wave in a ripple tank if time period of electrical vibrator is decreased? What will happen to the wave speed?
A: If time period of electrical vibrator is decreased then frequency will increase. If frequency increase then wave speed will also increase.
Q9: Why do water wave refract at the boundary of shallow water and deep water in ripple tank experiment?
A: Water wave refract at the boundary of shallow water and deep water due to change in speed and wavelength of waves.
Q10: Under what conditions are the waves diffracted most?
A: The diffraction of waves depends upon the opening of the slits. When the opening between two slits is less then the diffraction of waves will be most.
